Kelyns 69 Top Blind Date Tips

I wrote this in August and added to it recently

Through my mistakes and my dates' mistakes, I have learnt a few dos and don'ts of first dates. I want to share them with you. Obviously this is just my opinion!

69 Top Rules for First Dates:
Rule 1: PLAN the evening. Know the route and even have a backup plan.
Rule 2: Do not turn up with a hangover. If you are hungover either cancel and make sure that you make it up to them or brave it and so not tell your date.
Rule 3: DO NOT talk about your exes. If you can’t help it because something about her/him comes up in conversation refer to them as “the girl/guy that I was seeing at the time...”
Rule 4: Do not drink too much.
Rule 5: Do not walk into the wrong sex toilet.
Rule 6: DO NOT RANT! It’s OK to talk about politics but it is best to keep it light hearted or matter of fact, do not get opinionated, especially if you are drunk.
Rule 7: Do not complain about the people
Rule 8: Do not bring up too many drunken stories.
Rule 9: Do not quiz the other person about their past relationships.
Rule 10: Do not complain about a social group such as 'teenagers, ethnic or class populations'. Even if you do not mean to make generalisations. It might make you seem a little narrow minded.
Rule 11: Do not forget to bring cash out.
Rule 12: Do not choose an outfit or get ready last minute. It’s always good to have a back up outfit just in case you get play doh on your first choice of outfit.
Rule 13: If you have the sniffles, bring tissues. Do not put tissues on table.
Rule 14: Be polite to waiters and waitresses
Rule 15: Do not make your date feel like they are in an interview.
Rule 16: Do initiate hellos. A little hug and peck on cheek is best. Two is alright just make sure you indicate this. You don’t want to wave your face in the air like a fool.
Rule 17: If its a blind date, do initiate a goodbye little hug and a peck on the cheek again. On a dating marathon I doubt it’s a good idea to try for more than a cheek peck. Snogging 20 guys would be a little slaggy so bear that in mind.
Rule 18: Make jokes. But only funny ones
Rule 19: If your date has a long journey home in the dark, text to see if she got home ok and say night. Don’t do this if she lives locally or if it’s still daylight. Then you'll just come across as a grandpa.
Rule 20: Don’t make fun of your date’s job. If they have a rubbish or socially undesirable job, the chances are that they don’t want reminding.
Rule 21: no bragging
Rule 22: do not ask why your date is single
Rule 23: Dont try and scare them off. Just be honest if you are not interested in them by saying you don’t feel compatible.
Rule 24: do not mention your weight or that you're on a diet
Rule 25: if you are sick you should probably cancel your date. Especially if you are contagious or if you have lost your voice. It's best to call (or text if you have no voice) and explain that you'll make it up to them.
Rule 26: try and speak the same language as your date.
Rule 27: If there is a deluge or enormous storm outside and you're sick, and you dont think your date will mind, consider postponing the evening.
Rule 28: Do not keep asking your date what they want to do! Do not put them in the drivers seat too much. You want to hear their opinion but you should have one of your own. The best balance is to make a suggestion e.g. 'I love thai food. would you like to go here?'
Rule 29: Do not admit to strange sex tactics.
Rule 30: a cheap and thoughtful gift is a sweet touch
Rule 31: Do not be overly cynical about consumerism and popular culture. Unless your date also totally rejects the culture and community we live in
Rule 32: Don't over-dose on caffeine.
Rule 33: Leave enough time to easily get home safe!
Rule 34: Don't continuously interrupt your date. They might think that you're not really listening or you're not interested.
Rule 35: Don't be a hypocrite
Rule 36: Don't wave embarrassing items from your handbag such as sanitary towels in your dates face.
Rule 37: For a first date it is best to meet somewhere neutral rather than someones house. Rule 38: If you need to cancel then just be honest about this. Give as much notice as possible, apologise for the inconvenience and if you want to see them again then make sure you make it up to them.
Rule 39: Do not text messages that merely say 'how are you?' This might make you come across as a bit boring, lonely or both!
Rule 40: No name dropping
Rule 41: Be reliable and on-time
Rule 42: If your date is late because something bad or unexpected happened then empathise with them
Rule 43: Think about it before using a voucher or discount on a date. I personally think that's a savvy way of making your money go further but it needs to be done in a way that demonstrates your thought and savvy-ness and doesn't make you look stingy. Like say 'why don't we go here. They're doing a great promotion on tastecard and the service is really good.'
Rule 44: Listen to what your pre-date says to you and try and come up with something that shows you've really listened. E.g. the pop-tarts that Brett got me
Rule 45: Don't lecture your date
Date 46: Don’t try and explain your whole dating philosophy or strategy on a first date but maybe hint at what’s to come if you keep seeing each other
Rule 47: Don’t talk about yourself all night.
Rule 48: Try not to come across as an aggressive social climber.
Rule 49: Don’t slag off women or men
Rule 50: Don't say that you never want to be in a relationship ever again
Rule 51: Don't say something really matter-of-fact when you actually don’t know what you are talking about. Instead say “I think...”
Rule 52: Don’t have a pop at your date because you think they are ‘more educated’ or ‘more privileged’ than you.
Rule 53: Don’t ask too much about what your date thinks of relationships, how they’d define a relationship, what they are looking for etc on a first date. It’s usually a bit too heavy.
Rule 54: Don’t assume to much about your date’s class or background. E.g. don’t say stuff like ‘middle class people like us...” or “Well I doubt that you get many council estates in your area but...”
Rule 55: Try not to make culturally ignorant remarks.
Rule 56: Don’t go on about how you feel about being single
Rule 57: You can say that you don’t meet people often that you feel a spark with but don’t say that you are closed off to dating. It puts a downer on the evening
Rule 58: Don’t whine or moan about relationships
Rule 59: Don't talk about periods.
Rule 60: Try and enjoy your date as much as possible from beginning to end.
Rule 61: Be flirty if you are attracted to them. But do not act sleazy as if your date is a booty call (unless she is). Always keep within the boundaries of making sure your date feels comfortable.
Rule 62: If you treat your date (I suggest that you do), it should feel like your pleasure not your obligation. Don't assume that they don’t appreciate you paying.
Rule 63: Don't throw an alcoholic shot in your dates eye
Rule 64: Try not to let your friends set you up with a gay guy (unless you too are a gay guy) for a piss take
Rule 65: Give your date an indication of how formal/informal the location of the date will be so that they know how to dress
Rule 66: Try not to talk too much about your previous conquests
Rule 67: Don't start moaning about consumerism and fairtrade while you're wearing nikes and snorting coke
Rule 68: Have a few back up comments or questions saved for awkward silences, but don't feel like there needs to be non-stop chatter
Rule 69: If you don't like them, then don't see them again and be honest about it but in a kind way

My Relationship History

How on earth did you end up on a dating marathon?!

I have tried to avoid talking about my exes. It's a private subject and I haven't felt much like discussing it on the internet! But several people have asked me how I ended up on a 'dating marathon'. People assume that I must have a horrific dating past with a string of sad relationships behind me. It's not quite as dramatic as that! My relationship history is pretty average.

The Relationship Hopper

I went from the age of 15 to 23 in a relationship. There was more than one relationship but there was very little gap in between them. This left me with a longing desire to experience the single life and to make decisions by myself without feeling obliged to accommodate a partner. So when I became single I enjoyed the feeling of freedom very much, and because of this I was completely closed off to the dating again.

So how long have I been single?

Over a year of being single has passed, and people have stopped accepting the excuse that I just want to be by myself for a while. As well-meaning friends do, my friends have tried to set me up. At first I resisted, but then on a flight back to the UK after a really fun and varied holiday, my friend told me to just let it happen.

After all the fun I'd had on holiday, I was dreading going back to my 9 to 5 job. So when Sneha dared me to let all my best friends set me up on a date and then write about my experiences, I snapped up the chance to do something out of the ordinary. It seemed like a fun social experiment.

So why are you still so reluctant to commit or are you just picky?

I think it is highly likely that one day in the future I will have a long term relationship again. I also can't imagine being old and not having any children.

Obviously there are lots of perks to having someone to share your life with and to love. However, the time that I have spent being single has been significantly more fun and happier than the time that I spent in a relationship. That's not because I was miserable in both relationships (just one), it's actually that I am pretty happy with the status quo. Of course lots of people my age are settled with someone and happier for it. But several people that I see in their 20s and in a relationship, particularly those already in living with their partners, seem a bit boring. There behaviour and priorities seem weighed down with the burdens and complacency of married couples with children. Don't you have your 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, & 80s (and even more if you're lucky) to be living the settled life? This makes me reluctant to commit at 20-something!

On the other hand, I love a flirt. & I'm not uninterested in having a partner as long as it's casual in the sense that it's fun, there aren't too high expectations of longevity, and it adds something to my life rather than weighs me down.

I don't think that I am picky. It's not that I don't like people. I've actually stayed friends with most of my dates. But I just can't fake being into someone romantically when I am not.

Date 17: Brendan - When A Man Out-Dresses You (and is gay)

Who set me up this time?
Amar
Amar is one of the funniest men I know. He has a dirty, camp sense of humour. He is shockingly blunt and knows his own mind very well! To be honest he is a stereotypical gay guy. Amar was very competitive when it came to choosing me a date. I was very eager to see who he came up with. However we have very different taste in men! I think Amar thinks that he knows better than I do when it comes to men.
What did I know about Brendan?
He went to a private school in Harrow. He has a degree in fashion from the University of Edinburgh and he works for a large designer label in ‘brand management’. He enjoys skiing in the Alps which is where Amar met him. According to Amar, Brendan is articulate, cultured and fun. He sounds smooth.
First Impressions
I was absolutely paranoid about what to wear on my fashion designer date! I like the clothes that I wear but I am not known for my style.  In the end I opted for a navy V neck dress from mango and camel shoes from moda in pelle. You can’t go wrong with something as simple and neat as that. Brendan turned up in powder blue trousers, brown shoes and a white slim fitting shirt. He had swept over Black hair and emerald eyes. He was a vision.
What Happened?
Brendan was taking me to see a street ballet performance at a community centre near Clapham. I had actually been to a street ballet show before so I vaguely knew what to expect. Still, I felt a lot of pressure on my date with Brendan. I guess I am more of a beer and comedy girl as Martin (date 10) so fortunately had guessed. On the other hand, I was really excited to do something a bit different to my norm.
The show was actually brilliant and I am so glad that Brendan took me. The scenery was stunning and the dancing impressive.
Next we went to a bar. I don’t think that I felt very comfortable on this date. We had a good discussion about the show and a few other normal small talk topics of conversation. But for some reason I didn’t feel at ease. I felt self-conscious and as if our conversations were a bit awkward. This might have been my shyness coming out. Brendan is so handsome it’s intimidating.
Also Brendan is fiercely ambitious and competitive. It was really interesting to listen about his career. He was discussing the major fashion weeks and how he gets to go to 3 of them a year but he doesn’t always get a good seat at the shows. Within the next 5 years he wants to be right up the front. He explained his methods for doing so were basically living and breathing fashion and networking as much as possible. I can imagine that Brendan is good at networking. He is a pretty impressive guy all round. As I am sure you can guess, Brendan name dropped a lot.

Fashion is an undoubtedly sexy subject and an important part of our culture but I don’t really know much about what goes on behind the scenes. If I were to sum up my time on our date it would simply be fascinating.  Overall, Brendan seemed like a nice guy. He is captivating. I was attracted to him physically. He was also very attentive. He tended to my every need at the Lebanese restaurant we were at. But I did not think our personalities clicked in the way that they should do if you want to go on a second date. If I am honest, Brendan came across as a bit of a social climber with a real hunger for power and success. This is great but I still think that I am suited to someone who is more chilled out. I am attracted to people who are intelligent and resourceful but also go about creating success in a more individualistic way – perhaps. Plus Brendan might judge me for my curry and bud lifestyle and my rain coat and earmuffs attire! TBF I guess I would be pretending if I said that I didn't care that much about fashion.

Would I go out with him again?
I feel inclined to say yes because Brendan is interesting and a nice guy. On the grounds of us not having very much in common though, I think that it is more likely to be a no.
What other people have said?
They don’t think we sound like a good match. Amar has called me an idiot and told me that I am just intimidated by Brendan. I obviously disagree. I can be shy but not so shy that I wouldn’t take the plunge if I thought someone was right for me!

UPDATE: My naughty friend Amar set me up with Brendan knowing that we were totally incompatible because Brendan is actually homosexual! Thanks Amar! He thought it would be funny. HAHA idiot. So this should really be called my date with a gay guy! If you want to read about the hetero man that Amar set me up with try date 20.
Would I recommend him to a friend?

Date 16: Cooper – the Australian Booty Call

Who set me up this time?
My friend Liz set me up on this date. Liz was one of the people who originally said that she couldn’t find anyone because all her potentially suitable friends were all spoken for. Then her Australian friend Cooper emailed her to let her know that he was going to be in London for a month and he would like to be introduced to a few people. Liz responded by setting him up on a date with me.
What did I know about him?
He is Australian and he travelled around SE Asia which is where he met Liz. He is another blue eyed blond haired beauty and he is very athletic. He sounded decent! He was very interested in meeting me and participating in the blog. One of his texts read ‘I look forward to showing you the Australian way of dating.’ I had no idea what that meant but I was about to find out.
First Impressions
I met Cooper at Waterloo Station. He came across as chilled out, self assured and eager to socialise. I knew this date was going to be interesting straight away!
What happened?
Cooper told me that one of the best dates he was ever taken on (yes this man has ladies taking him out), was Sea World Australia. So he thought it would be a good idea to take me to the London Aquarium. I had to warn him that London Aquarium is not going to quite match up to Australian Sea World.
London aquarium is a great day out. It’s quite pricey if you pay the price on the door though. There are various offers about so make sure you get at least a third off like all locals do. Cooper had sorted 2-for-1 entry. Some guys might be embarrassed about getting a discounted date but I think it shows that you have financial sense. Charles (date six) also had our meal at 50% discount with top table/taste card. So both were gentlemanly and treated me but didn’t actually spend a bomb. Savvy men!
It was actually a bit strange going on a date at London Aquarium because I think that the last time I visited it, I broke up the most serious relationship I’ve had so far. ]This date was thankfully a lot better though!
Cooper impressed me with his aquamarine knowledge. He grew up by the beach and knew quite a bit about the ocean and its wildlife. His geeky knowledge and passion for the sea made me attracted to him. (So it is official. I can be attracted to blondes!) We got to see several talks. My favourite bit was watching the sharks being fed. They tear their heads around from side to side like in the movies!

Afterwards we went to dinner. Cooper cracked a hilarious joke about taking me to eat sushi. I love sushi and I am relatively comfortable with carnivorism but I draw the line at eating fish raw straight after seeing several swim about.
So instead we went for Thai Chicken Curry. We sat at a cosy little booth around a small round table. Cooper was very flirty with me. Out of all my dates he was the most ‘touchy feely’ and  I wonder if the fact that I agreed to go out with him even though he is only in London for a short time gave him the impression I was up for a fling? This probably wasn’t helped by the fact that I have been dating several men recently. That screams ‘PROMISCUOUS’ doesn’t it? I think he was a bit of a womaniser. Definitely not the type of guy my male friend's would set me up with.
We talked about British and Australian comedy as we share a love of both. Cooper had a few jokes of his own. Most of them were pretty crude. We discussed how I got on to the dating marathon which involved me disclosing that I am chronically single. As we said goodbye Cooper told me in his rough Australian accent that should I feel the need to spend the night with him at any point in the future, I should call him because he is definitely up for it. “I can be your booty call,” he offered jokingly. “I really don’t mind helping out a friend.” That was a bit blunt and maybe a bit creepy. Maybe that’s what he meant when he said that he was going to show me the Australian way of dating?
Cooper was really funny, good looking and very confident. Although he was a bit touchy-feely and he offered to be my booty call, he kind of pulled it off. Most men would seem incredible sleazy for doing this. Cooper just seemed mildy sleazy. Maybe it's a racist thing that Aussies get away with it?

Despite the rude jokes it seemed that he knew his boundaries very well and never pushed it too far or got intense. For that reason Cooper came across as a casual flirt rather than crude.

Although I am “not that type of girl”, if I ever were to suddenly feel the need to make a booty call, I guess it would be to someone like Cooper! I strongly doubt it though...
Would I go out with him again?
Yes, I guess so! He’s a bit of a social butterfly and a potential slut but he seems like an honest, fun person to be around. We have exchanged emails and I get his weekly travelling update. If we are ever in the same city again then it would be fun to meet up. Just as long as he knows it’s not a booty call!
What other people have said
That we should go meet him in Australia!
Would I recommend him to a friend?
Yes
