My Relationship History

How on earth did you end up on a dating marathon?!

I have tried to avoid talking about my exes. It's a private subject and I haven't felt much like discussing it on the internet! But several people have asked me how I ended up on a 'dating marathon'. People assume that I must have a horrific dating past with a string of sad relationships behind me. It's not quite as dramatic as that! My relationship history is pretty average.

The Relationship Hopper

I went from the age of 15 to 23 in a relationship. There was more than one relationship but there was very little gap in between them. This left me with a longing desire to experience the single life and to make decisions by myself without feeling obliged to accommodate a partner. So when I became single I enjoyed the feeling of freedom very much, and because of this I was completely closed off to the dating again.

So how long have I been single?

Over a year of being single has passed, and people have stopped accepting the excuse that I just want to be by myself for a while. As well-meaning friends do, my friends have tried to set me up. At first I resisted, but then on a flight back to the UK after a really fun and varied holiday, my friend told me to just let it happen.

After all the fun I'd had on holiday, I was dreading going back to my 9 to 5 job. So when Sneha dared me to let all my best friends set me up on a date and then write about my experiences, I snapped up the chance to do something out of the ordinary. It seemed like a fun social experiment.

So why are you still so reluctant to commit or are you just picky?

I think it is highly likely that one day in the future I will have a long term relationship again. I also can't imagine being old and not having any children.

Obviously there are lots of perks to having someone to share your life with and to love. However, the time that I have spent being single has been significantly more fun and happier than the time that I spent in a relationship. That's not because I was miserable in both relationships (just one), it's actually that I am pretty happy with the status quo. Of course lots of people my age are settled with someone and happier for it. But several people that I see in their 20s and in a relationship, particularly those already in living with their partners, seem a bit boring. There behaviour and priorities seem weighed down with the burdens and complacency of married couples with children. Don't you have your 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, & 80s (and even more if you're lucky) to be living the settled life? This makes me reluctant to commit at 20-something!

On the other hand, I love a flirt. & I'm not uninterested in having a partner as long as it's casual in the sense that it's fun, there aren't too high expectations of longevity, and it adds something to my life rather than weighs me down.

I don't think that I am picky. It's not that I don't like people. I've actually stayed friends with most of my dates. But I just can't fake being into someone romantically when I am not.

Date 6.5 Charles - the Rom-Com

In a moment of stupidity, I thought that Charles might like to skip the capital’s pollution and spend some sunshine in the suburbs. The problem with that is that the town I live in is dead and the weather was bad! I like living outside the madness of the city but I found showing Charles (who lives in the glamour of Chelsea) around a deserted town a little lame. Having said that, I really appreciate Charles making the effort to come to me. It’s great when a date does that!
We went for a snack before the film started. We discussed celebrity spotting and London clubbing. When I was a student, my friends and I partied at many Mayfair and Soho clubs and saw many minor to well-known celebs. I am not much of a celebrity fanatic but they are still fun to spot! Charles agreed and as a frequenter of famous bars such as Mahiki and Wisky as well as lesser known exclusive venues and he enjoys celeb spotting. Charles is a big fan of popular music and has work experience in this industry. He also lives in the same building as x factor star Matt Cardle.

Charles is very accommodating. Perhaps a little too accommodating. He asks you where you want to sit and is very attentive. This is a quality but perhaps he could work on making a few suggestions to avoid coming across as too passive? For instance ‘that table looks nice. Do you want to sit there?’ Rather than ‘where do you want to sit? You decide’. I felt that Charles put me in the driving seat a little too much.

Charles is friendly and chatty with waiting staff. This is one of the things that most impressed me on this date. He was hilarious joking with the waitress at the Mexican restaurant. Charles said that he used to work in a club/bar while he was a student. Without thinking I asked why HE would work in bar. This was a bit of a blunt question- Oops! I worked in bars as a student but I did not expect it from Charles. The truth is that after talking about his schooling, family background, shopping trips with his mother etc it was apparent that Charles was not short of cash. As I tried to dig myself out of a hole Charles explained that although he did not need to work for money, as a youngster he wanted to earn some keep out of principle. A pretty impressive work ethic he has!
We both enjoyed the film 'Bridesmaids' but Charles expressed slightly more conservative views about it. He thought that the nazi scene on the plane was a little too ‘out there’ while I thought it was hilarious. I think this pointed to a difference in our characters. He is urbane and I am a tom-boy. I actually think that Charles is too in touch with his feminine side for me!

Charles talked about a subject that is taboo for an early date.... exes! He mentioned that as someone who came from an all-boys school, he was shy around girls and described himself as someone who was a bit late to start with women. This type of honesty is slightly endearing but I would suggest you wait till later than date 1.5 to share it. Also, he asked me about my relationship history. I really didn’t know what to say. I don’t want to talk about exes. They’re over. To be honest I feel like I’ve wiped the slate clean. I hate having to explain this!

Towards the end of the evening, while we were waiting for the rain to stop so I could walk him back to the station, Charles explained that he had had an invite to the F1 party that evening. O dear. I had brought him to my naff home town when he could have been partying with the pussy cat dolls.

Would I go out with him again?
Well you might have noticed that Charles and I have very different personalities. I guess we’re not compatible. However, I think that if we hung out more we would be pretty good friends. He is one of the most intriguing characters I have ever been introduced to. I can see why Rahul gets along with him. I reckon that if Charles had been at university in London with us then we would have had a lot of laughs. So in conclusion yes I owe him mojitos and I really rate Charles. I would see him again but I think that we are friendship material and nothing more.

What other people have said
He seems nice. Some people seem to think that Charles might be gay. I am not so sure. He's rather in touch with his feminine side but theres nothing wrong with that.

Would I recommend him to a friend?
Yes.

Date 5 : Darren – a nice man but still into his exes

Who set me up this time
Kumar
A friend from my uni years. Not really sure how Kumar and I became friends as we were studying completely different subjects and were also at different universities in London. Kumar was at Kings.
What do I know about my date
Interestingly my male friends have completely different ideas about what I am looking for in a date. Men tend to say things like ‘he will take care of you’, ‘he is really romantic’, ‘he has a lot of money’,  and ‘he will treat you.’ This might suggest that men think I am looking for a provider. I’m not. In comparison, my female friends are seem to understand my needs more and are likely to say things like ‘he’s really fun’. ‘I think you two will really get along.’
As this date was set up by a man, I assumed that Darren will be a high earner, soft, romantic, and a gentleman who ‘treats’ his date. Perhaps this also reflects the way that guys treat a male friend's female friend as opposed to a female friend's female friend..? I look forward to being treated. But if I were to have a long term partner, I would prefer things to be more 50/50. And for me, the most important thing about a man is how much you enjoy his company not how chivalrous he is.

First impressions
Darren is well-dressed, polite and good looking. He gives me a nice confident greeting and we walk straight to the bar he has a reservation at. Perfect. He’s organised.

What happened?
We went to a Chinese bar in Soho. It was a great choice of location. Soho has a tainted reputation but it still remains my favourite area of London. Similar to London as a whole, Soho is a world of extremes. There are the usual tourist spots vs. the in-the-know side street venues, grungey brothels vs. glitzy celebrity clubs, pubs that are falling apart vs. high class bars. Soho is also home to some of the best restaurants and comedy that London offers.
I would describe the bar we went to as a relaxed, high end cocktail bar that was pretty classy but not intimidating. I discovered that the original venue was based in Hong Kong City which is easily one of my favourite cities in the world. As I was tired from a day at work, and hot and thirsty from the tube, my first drink was a fruit mocktail. This was lovely. I should really start more dates on a mocktail. It is a much healthier way to begin things! Don't worry though I caught up lightweight style.
Darren and I went through the normal small-talk subjects; how we know Kumar, careers, home town, holidays and films. Then we came across a topic of discussion which should not be brought up on a first date... his ex. Of course, many of us have an ex issue. But you need to remember that incredibly few people are interested in hearing about these issues. And the person who least wants to listen to you talk about your sad and difficult breakup is the person you are on a date with. Even if you talk about your ex in a reasonable and calm way, the truth is that if you start talking about your ex, your date will inevitably believe that you are not over them.
Not only did Darren make the mistake of talking and his ex but he also fell into the trap of quizzing me about mine. Luckily my story is nice and short: I have two ex-boyfriends from long term relationships (4 years each). Both of them are completely over and I am glad they are over. One has disappeared. The other is around and we are not on bad terms but just don’t really talk. Simple.

He asked me why I was single. I think that this question was meant to be a compliment as it was phrased, ‘You’re attractive, intelligent and kind. I am surprised you’re single. Why are you single?’ but i find this question really awkward. I just mumbled i dunno. I swear that the most happy and independent single person in the world will still feel slightly irritated and defensive at this question. Or is it just me?
Next we went to a little Moroccan restaurant near Regents Street. We had a mixture of spicy vegetarian foods. Luckily a change of scenery led to a change of conversation. We were on comedy. Like me, Darren is a keen fan of Richard Ayoade British actor, writer, comedian, director (sidepoint my mum fancies him). As we tried to get to the bottom of why Garth Merenghi is such a fantastic show, Darren and I managed to build a good rapport and I was enjoying the evening again!
The food was right up my street. We shared a variety of dishes. One note about sharing dishes though, this can be quite intimate. Perhaps it is not the best choice for a blind date? It is actually a better date for the first date that you have sex. Isn't sharing food with a date a bit like foreplay. Or perhaps I am being too imaginative and weird here (sorry friends and family). But if you agree then I recommend Ethiopian restaurants with your target. While I was on my date with Darren I somewhat inappropriately decided that Moroccan could be a good second choice for foreplay food.
I don’t want to sound crude but I really could not help but notice that Darren works out. He easily passes the sideways glance test.
Towards the end of the evening Darren asked me whether he should prepare for any criticism in my blog. I had to be honest with him so I told him that I didn’t really like talking about his ex. Nor did I like him quizzing me about my relationship history. People prefer not to be defined by their past relationships and it comes across as if you still have feelings for your ex. In crueller terms it is a bit boring.
Darren was gracious in receiving this feedback and his excuse was that he had had a bit of a crushing break up. And he wanted me to know that he is a bit fragile. Being such a conscientious person, I asked him if he was too fragile for me to write a blog entry about him. Luckily he laughed and said he doesn’t mind honest feedback be it face to face or on the internet. Kumar has a good friend here. Hot, sensitive and up for critical feedback. The rest of the date went really well so this all the criticism I have. I quite liked Darren but we both decided that as he was still a bit cut up about his relationship that ended 5 months before our date, he should probably spend a bit of time being single before he starts seeing someone again. Once Darren is over his ex I think he will be a good catch again.

Would I go out with him again?
No

What other people have said
Surely everyone knows that you don't talk about your ex on a first date?

Would I recommend him to a friend?

Maybe in a good few months time!
