Date Number 2 - Sebastian: a man usually in tights

Who set me up this time
Joe is one of the very few people who I met in a bar and actually stayed in contact with. I think it was our shared passion for fruit that made me give him my real number. Plus I had just moved to Brighton, knew no one and was desperate for friends!

Joe is a really sweet guy and a great boyfriend to his girlfriend Sinetta. Joe has a law degree, and was offered a top city job after completing his studies. He rejected this job offer in a gutsy decision to go into business with his brother. He now runs a very successful juice bar.  I have high hopes for Joe’s choice of man.
What did I know about Seb
Seb is also a law graduate who did not go into law. Instead he went into music journalism. He writes reviews for new bands in Brighton and London. He has worked with Q magazine and is now a freelance writer. He organises and promotes gigs in Brighton. I’ve also been warned he wears tights/leggings! I guess it worked for Robin Hood.
First impressions
First of all I was disappointed that Seb was not wearing leggings. I had mentally prepared myself for a man in leggings. Seb turned up in grey trousers, camel coloured shoes and a smart shirt. There was no awkward greeting, Seb took control and gave me a friendly hug. I love it when people do this. It takes the edge off straight away.

What Happened
I have not been on many dates before. But I have a feeling that this was a typical date.
We went out for Thai food and cocktails in Angel. The venue was smart but not pretentious. While I must admit that I love going to posh restaurants for the experience, I am a lot more comfortable meeting someone at a in A middle of the road venue.
The problem with Angel is that I lived on Pentonville Road as a student. As soon as I step foot on Upper Street a stream of memories hit me and I feel like a 19 year old looking for novel, outlandish things to do again. Lady bugs, dancing mirror girl, sourz and don’t forget to take the detour up the British Library railings on the way home (Rahul).
So as it turns out, I ended up breaking the ‘no drunken stories’ dating rule. This time I really could not help it. Upper Street was flooded with SOAS students, many of them repeating my history. Seb responded with some rather interesting tales of his own. Seb also broke another dating rule. He name dropped! Turns out he has met a lot of Brit Musicians. For instance, he used to be friends with one of the Kooks and his female friend slept with one of them in the bathroom of a club I used to go to. As interesting as name dropping can be this did not seem to come up in natural conversation. It really seemed as though he was trying to brag! And this should not be necessary on a first date. To be fair to Seb, it was interesting to listen to.
Although Seb was clearly very passionate about music and enjoyed talking about it, I actually found him most animated when talking about his dog MeatFeast. I’m not really a dog person but I really enjoyed listening to him talk about how MeatFeast was a rescue dog. Seb’s love for his pet is really cute. From this conversation I could tell that Seb is clearly the type of person who is kind and respects others including animals. I have a little theory about how people regard the natural world. If I see someone is heartless or cruel to animals I often assume they would be cruel to people too if they could get away with it. And when people are empathetic towards both humans and animals I believe they are probably more genuinely nice. I’m sure it’s not a foolproof theory but so far it has not been wrong.
Seb is a really nice guy. Good looking. I don’t even care that he wears tights. However I don’t think there was much chemistry between us. He seems like the type of guy I could be friends with quite easily but we did not actually share much common ground.
What other people have said:
That I should see him again. Seb is after all connected with the very cool music scene in Brighton. I guess that name-dropping would probably woo a lot of my friends!

Would I go out with him again?

As friends and in a group yes. If I was visiting Brighton it would be great to catch up.

Would I recommend him to a friend?
Yes, Seb is a great guy. If I had a friend who had lots in common with him then I’d love to set them up.
